However, once we got there and she realized that it was more of a book fans' event than a comicon or wargames show, she got into it.</div><div><br /></div><div>While the con did have open gaming (which we did not take advantage of)--and a dealer room and an art room, both of which sucked away some of our money--the main attraction was all the authors who participated in readings, discussion, panels and book signings.<p></p><p>My favorite panel was the first one we attended, "Spotlight on Southwest-Themed Sci Fi and Fantasy," which had four Texas authors talking about (mainly) the Lone Star State and its influence on speculative fiction. </p><p>I enjoyed that all the panel members were from or currently living in parts of the state where I had resided at one time or another. I also got a kick out of the fact that two of them were originally from my old stomping ground in West Texas, and their discussions about that region took me back there. They also name-checked several Texas writers, including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Howard">Robert E. Howard</a> and <a href="http://www.elizabethmoon.com/">Elizabeth Moon</a>.</p><p>Other panels were just as interesting (like the one on "What have Texas Infrastructure Failures Taught Us About the Coming Apocalypse?") and had may authors from around Austin as well as other parts of the state. We also heard from local horror author <a href="https://twitter.com/gabino_iglesias?lang=en">Gabino Iglesias</a>, and went home with a couple of his books as well as his autograph.</p><p>The highlight for us was special guest <a href="https://craphound.com/">Cory Doctorow </a>reading an exceprt from one of his upcoming books, <i><a href="https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/thelostcause">The Lost Cause</a></i>. His writing captivated my spouse and I, and his take on the future, which can be described as "hopepunk" is one I enjoy.</p><p>So that was our first science fiction convention. I think we'll be going again next year.</p></div>Desert Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13862907749003106864noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7290267799484368042.post-60385635856496168312023-08-02T20:04:00.001-05:002023-08-02T20:04:50.537-05:00Back and there again: Battle of Five Armies with Oathmark<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8KeemAtIm8DzGM9YhM0BU9vRUn96C52XJniN8ntOJV16xQUkHhjGwMW1vI23fE-bIRg4CbYxgp6Pl6IrOOpKp6-VdJqxSS0qcpWe8mz9MWCQ5JBCaRruhxksrwr-oy1JBIXRBiPOgJifz/s399/battle+of+five+armies.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="265" data-original-width="399" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8KeemAtIm8DzGM9YhM0BU9vRUn96C52XJniN8ntOJV16xQUkHhjGwMW1vI23fE-bIRg4CbYxgp6Pl6IrOOpKp6-VdJqxSS0qcpWe8mz9MWCQ5JBCaRruhxksrwr-oy1JBIXRBiPOgJifz/w400-h266/battle+of+five+armies.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />Some time ago, I discussed <a href="http://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/2020/11/battle-of-five-armies-for-hott.html">gaming the Battle of Five Armies using <i>Hordes of the Things</i></a>. I want to return to that theorizing, but since my friends and I have been playing <i>Oathmark </i>for the past year or so, let's talk about using that ruleset to recreate the scenario from the book version of <i>The Hobbit</i>.<p></p>For convenience, we'll go with a figure scale of 1:20, meaning one miniature represents around one score of participants in the battle. I constructed this dice tower from a breadcrumbs can and dollar-store foam board. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLR-iShm0dSo39tVnW0dvo3bmfEDGx0Q4uzwJEDdmqgwYa25r7X1eRTfxIWcPo4cvZjYpOdmQv6r3IT3PkyYca8n06eRz5ix5ZnuU5umrPDtNOVw5FSejBr2xx07nJIX8jKnrV45vdrdcnnI7tjxEaeeRu6hZmvpgNJlRX1fHEvsj9FDorH52UfS7_7Ew/s800/tower%2001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="545" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLR-iShm0dSo39tVnW0dvo3bmfEDGx0Q4uzwJEDdmqgwYa25r7X1eRTfxIWcPo4cvZjYpOdmQv6r3IT3PkyYca8n06eRz5ix5ZnuU5umrPDtNOVw5FSejBr2xx07nJIX8jKnrV45vdrdcnnI7tjxEaeeRu6hZmvpgNJlRX1fHEvsj9FDorH52UfS7_7Ew/w436-h640/tower%2001.jpg" width="436" /></a></div>I cut off the top and bottom, then cut three slits at 45° angles to bounce the dice and cut an opening at the bottom. The wood planks surrounding that doorway are just craft (popsicle) sticks. For the stones, I used scissors to cut dollar-store foam board into irregularly sized and shapes stone blocks. Then I took those foam pieces and shook them in a can with real rocks to add texture. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigI-vO-ZAKSTPa5kiOUi6wTKmuV__8ni_f0h8Fpw8v2bViuMXGKYwa9hIKOXeMBNuBMNSG07PihvXPcv3l_YuOGqW4DoUzB8Yk5dcRrlW0xEGt8yGYWbbcen92h44-XthgTdsH_K_GjVF7y9z9dU8iaIaYSKw5eheDNWfE3hA5Uiu4NtBkaQ_wlwowe5kq/s800/tower%2002.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="502" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigI-vO-ZAKSTPa5kiOUi6wTKmuV__8ni_f0h8Fpw8v2bViuMXGKYwa9hIKOXeMBNuBMNSG07PihvXPcv3l_YuOGqW4DoUzB8Yk5dcRrlW0xEGt8yGYWbbcen92h44-XthgTdsH_K_GjVF7y9z9dU8iaIaYSKw5eheDNWfE3hA5Uiu4NtBkaQ_wlwowe5kq/w402-h640/tower%2002.jpg" width="402" /></a></div>After gluing on all the foam bricks, I painted it with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Rlv-ug-mtnXuMwlpcqFgg">Black Magic Craft</a>'s suggested mix of black paint and Mod Podge to strengthen the build and to protect the foam from the solvents in spray paints. I've been playing Galactic Knights and Gaslands, historicals and boardgames (like Terraforming Mars), old-school sci-fi like MAATAC and Ogre, and in the fantasy genre, (my new favorite) Oathmark.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>This also means I've accomplished quite a lot of painting over the past 18 months, and made a few terrain pieces as well. </div><div><br /></div><div>I hope to be sharing my wargaming escapades with y'all in the coming months. Personally, 2021 was a horrible year, as old age claimed two close family members, and COVID showed no signs of ending (thanks, anti-vaxxers!).</p><p>On the gaming front, not much better. My group attempted to start up gaming again on a regular basis in July, but the pandemic came back with a vengance, so we had to put that on hold again. I did manage to slap paint on an average of <a href="http://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/search/label/At%20Least%20One%20Miniature%20A%20Week">one miniature a week</a> (if you count some of the terrain pieces I made, which I did)--and I <a href="http://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/2021/11/millenniumcon-2021-day-1.html">did attend MillenniumCon</a> and run <a href="http://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/2021/11/monopolis-first-session-millcon-day-2.html">my Monopolis game </a><i><a href="http://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/2021/11/monopolis-second-session-millcon-day-2.html">two times</a></i>! And I did manage to keep this blog going. Thanks everyone for their feedback, I apologize if I haven't yet responded to your comments.</p><p>I'm not going to set any goals for the coming year--recent history has shown me that's futile--but I will try to game and enjoy what I can and share it on this blog. Meanwhile, here's wishing you and yours a brighter new year in 2022.</p>Desert Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13862907749003106864noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7290267799484368042.post-73534409512987395912021-12-30T23:05:00.003-06:002022-01-05T09:46:11.251-06:00Landing party<p><i>Terran Transolar Federation Naval Command's signal woke the <b>Devastator</b>-class heavy galactic war machine from its suspended operation. My painting table, along with some broken up styrofoam packaging, made an adequate battlefield. It was a simple scenario: one Terran <i>Devastator</i>-class heavy galactic war machine had to defeat or drive off a quarted of Entomalian <i>Black Widow</i>-class destroyer war machines, whose goal was to defeat the Terran. The Terran had better armor and more weapons, but the Bugs had the numbers. I would play out movement, which is supposed to be simultaneous, by moving the Terran first, then the bugs either randomly or whatever made the most sense for them. Shooting (also simultaneous) was simple: The Terran would fire everything at one Ent, and the Ents would fire everything at the Terran.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjPgJHetQr-dxvYVf_lcm-R1OdKptDFr-szVhWlgACA7Rj_owxGLXDxhOaQ5tgys_x9bs7znUlanb4rrDL2r6N1hzM2ZY3IE66sdcS25RIGDbGTh8AyscrhNogP1aNKcrqexecI75sjnCdR01CeDzAjtafoD8Qi0JioxGyVPeTW-gIZLN78uilCPrUQrw=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="431" data-original-width="800" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjPgJHetQr-dxvYVf_lcm-R1OdKptDFr-szVhWlgACA7Rj_owxGLXDxhOaQ5tgys_x9bs7znUlanb4rrDL2r6N1hzM2ZY3IE66sdcS25RIGDbGTh8AyscrhNogP1aNKcrqexecI75sjnCdR01CeDzAjtafoD8Qi0JioxGyVPeTW-gIZLN78uilCPrUQrw=w400-h215" width="400" /></a></div><p>The first turn was just maneuvering, as everything was out of range. On the second turn the <i>Devastator </i>was in range of the first pair. Both sides had climbed outcroppings, hoping to obtain a hull-down advantage. Instead, they shot at each other with everything they could. The Terran hit one bug with several lasers, none of which penetrated its hull. Another shot hit the Ent's mobility system, slowing it down. The <i>Black Widows</i>' return fire failed to penetrate the Terran's hull, but one shot did disable one of the <i>Devastator</i>'s launchers. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg9ET5ECCzaet-smyADY5O3mXLZpfOI9quOKMeu-aOPKx8c8XfYyHp3bhBdM6YEjfQLzyaLjoZ_O5OS3qdyoD1yhtHBpjcDF_FE3PbIHD9jFqYXAUDQnalY38arwg3pb3JgIS9fUE2Z8-AbuOxk64LJ2Nf07O2ey2_eq-svPyjkd4j-ABwFc-P1ZKrYLw=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="800" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg9ET5ECCzaet-smyADY5O3mXLZpfOI9quOKMeu-aOPKx8c8XfYyHp3bhBdM6YEjfQLzyaLjoZ_O5OS3qdyoD1yhtHBpjcDF_FE3PbIHD9jFqYXAUDQnalY38arwg3pb3JgIS9fUE2Z8-AbuOxk64LJ2Nf07O2ey2_eq-svPyjkd4j-ABwFc-P1ZKrYLw=w400-h214" width="400" /></a></div><p>Turn three saw the Terran move closer to the first pair of Entomalians in order to keep the other two out of range--but that meant giving up the high ground. Most of the <i>Devastator</i>'s shots landed on the ice in front of the <i>Black Widow</i>, but it did manage to take out one of the bug's particle weapon launchers. In return, the Entomalians strippped a launcher off the Terran. A hull hit failed to penetrate, and successful shots to the Terran's treads did not slow it down.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiICgseuS4pLkkQxdD8JTFv52z_0Pd1EbWCG-6gZWjIYFmmwGWovhaWtUneUMzu4CpNvr5sl9JvVUxi0mR-wii6J9tw-6YtIjAtS6lJCg9qHeKT_An2so0614B_muPEd1MV6yqtazaCN2_1qIBmQG8XCe5HJo2AMCpzRBHWektnm5AkyeiIEtMvfBmOtQ=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="332" data-original-width="800" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiICgseuS4pLkkQxdD8JTFv52z_0Pd1EbWCG-6gZWjIYFmmwGWovhaWtUneUMzu4CpNvr5sl9JvVUxi0mR-wii6J9tw-6YtIjAtS6lJCg9qHeKT_An2so0614B_muPEd1MV6yqtazaCN2_1qIBmQG8XCe5HJo2AMCpzRBHWektnm5AkyeiIEtMvfBmOtQ=w400-h166" width="400" /></a></div><p>The second pair of <i>Black Widows </i>tried to close the distance during turn four, but the Terran heavy kept its distance while closing with the first pair, who stayed in place. The <i>Devastator</i>'s energy weapon volley again was mainly ineffective, hitting a laser and a launcher, but doing no other damage. However, its particle weapon launcher, which I play as indirect fire, scored another hit on the bug's mobility system, reducing its speed even more. The Entomalian shooting was more successful, as they stripped the Terran of three laser cannon and one particle weapon launcher. However, the Devastator's armor abosrbed two laser hits to the hull and one to the turret with no damage.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgorpkEzCMZ4_SdrkbjIWtK8VS8hZpdznZq5pQC94jR0zVxsrdU5nHQt5mHF0bUQz2GtI-haoaBDxOV1bbeFxx3Fk9RY71PEP99tw2EKXorjmcc6Yshup5dapcuIIkoj5CM2yTfZCMvMUkCrhUznbWKRguUqhGqbzELJvL5RJmRD88E4iSXkQ41HqEPvA=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="468" data-original-width="800" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgorpkEzCMZ4_SdrkbjIWtK8VS8hZpdznZq5pQC94jR0zVxsrdU5nHQt5mHF0bUQz2GtI-haoaBDxOV1bbeFxx3Fk9RY71PEP99tw2EKXorjmcc6Yshup5dapcuIIkoj5CM2yTfZCMvMUkCrhUznbWKRguUqhGqbzELJvL5RJmRD88E4iSXkQ41HqEPvA=w400-h234" width="400" /></a></div><p>The fifth turn saw the Terran move closer to its targets in order to keep the remaining Entomalians out of range. However, with just a single heavy laser and a single particle weapon launcher, it was not able to do much damage to its hull-down target. Although the particle weapon hit its target's weakest armor, it still was not able to penetrate the hull. And as the damaged <i>Black Widow</i> fired back with just one medium beam and one heavy beam (its partner was too far back to shoot), it stuck the <i>Devastator</i>'s hull and turret. A successful penetration roll meant the heavy galactic war machine was destroyed--a resounding success for the Entomalian scouts! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjCpUBexD_7ghFfIDYaTGPfXlJY40WKKOy7bO0VJHLs5EIQpjO_JlFklWQTX6P5OXbDQX13FvqmBP0SsoXoAvjoYOyFNVGrSJo3p-cm9w3x7dsXplzDhEjrEiYg0C2aPjWMd9_Wg18U5sdiBlLfUxvR4J3d6GeW30j70xGOs14OU2Zg3eKTlXpA2O79Ew=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="462" data-original-width="800" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjCpUBexD_7ghFfIDYaTGPfXlJY40WKKOy7bO0VJHLs5EIQpjO_JlFklWQTX6P5OXbDQX13FvqmBP0SsoXoAvjoYOyFNVGrSJo3p-cm9w3x7dsXplzDhEjrEiYg0C2aPjWMd9_Wg18U5sdiBlLfUxvR4J3d6GeW30j70xGOs14OU2Zg3eKTlXpA2O79Ew=w400-h231" width="400" /></a></div><p><i>The burning Terran MAATAC sank into the melting ice, as the Entomalian vehicles chittered at each other in hexidecimal code. And thinking about how to game it out. In this setting, ships have to change their direction of thrust to change their vector--no <i>Star Trek</i>- or <i>Star Wars</i>-style swooping about. And while <i>Galactic Knights </i>does a good job of representing vector movement, it doesn't really convey the sense of planetary distances on a solar scale that I get from <i>The Expanse</i>. That's where <i><a href="http://www.sjgames.com/triplanetary/">Triplanetary</a></i>. the Steve Jackson Games rerelease of the Game Designers Workshop classic space combat boardgame, comes in.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhgGpTOqSTr4ELL75gC2nFNUTf_z41l0uUpK_R7bsX_2qFwDPCGLzYYmN9yHiKYIuDwnleBYa9oAA7so3y-xfAW3YUahuWdHGOxoXU901sToLFJgQU0s8AoL7vhHKjc-vJ2siEHcGSo-RHyFp9P0Wk6eII8z7uudLFX0z93GUzCZGiMfSKi64E6md9p8Q=s504" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="504" data-original-width="501" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhgGpTOqSTr4ELL75gC2nFNUTf_z41l0uUpK_R7bsX_2qFwDPCGLzYYmN9yHiKYIuDwnleBYa9oAA7so3y-xfAW3YUahuWdHGOxoXU901sToLFJgQU0s8AoL7vhHKjc-vJ2siEHcGSo-RHyFp9P0Wk6eII8z7uudLFX0z93GUzCZGiMfSKi64E6md9p8Q=w398-h400" width="398" /></a></div><p></p><p>This game has a map of the solar system (including the Belt) out to Jupiter, takes planetary gravity fields into account, and has counters enough to account for all the polities in the setting: white with blue and red markings (United Nations of Earth and Luna) red with black markings (Martian Congressional Republic Navy), and black with white markings (Outer Planets Alliance). There are also some blue with white counters to represent noncombatants, and about a dozen colors of corvettes for unique spaceships (like maybe the <i>Rocinante</i> or the <i>Razorback</i>). This setting and these counters would make a good multiplayer scenario for a convention game, with each side having different goals. So when Youtube's algorithm presented me with some videos about making your own contrast paints, I decided I will give it a shot. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjD9alNh7c8AvJr25YARTURPlnjRxAi_D1qgRvxYMYepXNOhB48wX1eSpTgHPIX9fcQQho-37jVhxSVMYEf_xTsLl4TNFPY5pd0wm4dt8YgfLIcBW7kTtLB6DAvrjRDHgJOYFh8EkN7D5atC25OFIFp447DkOT4eZnCnuL9rqsVWpRwCxrzJnlzR8rslw=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="504" data-original-width="800" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjD9alNh7c8AvJr25YARTURPlnjRxAi_D1qgRvxYMYepXNOhB48wX1eSpTgHPIX9fcQQho-37jVhxSVMYEf_xTsLl4TNFPY5pd0wm4dt8YgfLIcBW7kTtLB6DAvrjRDHgJOYFh8EkN7D5atC25OFIFp447DkOT4eZnCnuL9rqsVWpRwCxrzJnlzR8rslw=w400-h253" width="400" /></a></div><div>Armed with a craft store gift card from my wife (another great Xmas gift), I came home with some inks and matte fluid medium. With these three primary colors along with the medium brown (I already have some black and dark brown inks), I figure I can mix whatever hue I need. Although we tried to get going again last summer, the increase in COVID meant we put our weekly games on hiatus for awhile. But since we're all vaxxed, we got together to make the Red Planet habitable. Here's how that world looked at the end of our game (note the 3-D tiles, which I detailed with some washes and drybrushing):<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0GqsSXr6-M0BpUKOQt26k04tnykoWYH1Fqp2hP5fHckrE7vdnngzwRtYVJykhblDgcjmEcIlC8uQqlUxx8x-lXcWZeBaCdo86b-w7e_xWgPNpadjbdKcHoFNW93B7Uq5coPUbRAW4YRYYaNux5p51PuMwMHz4rZVpFD2ERNRi4ofpk0K-4_cSUERBhw=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0GqsSXr6-M0BpUKOQt26k04tnykoWYH1Fqp2hP5fHckrE7vdnngzwRtYVJykhblDgcjmEcIlC8uQqlUxx8x-lXcWZeBaCdo86b-w7e_xWgPNpadjbdKcHoFNW93B7Uq5coPUbRAW4YRYYaNux5p51PuMwMHz4rZVpFD2ERNRi4ofpk0K-4_cSUERBhw=w400-h225" width="400" /></a></div><div>Although it was a low-scoring game since a couple of us wanted to finish terraforming to prevent other players from generating more points through their economic engines, we had a good time. I came in second out of four players in what turned out to be a pretty challenging match. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjzlHFoQRo_xoDxRyrVQ0sUVxETBcPVX72ngcsRmC1U8IWezBrnNEnalQBqsxMKg-Vk2qkHO6m-HfzQLPoCRzWQoiKsbghMmrDbPctU8tHDepMRII3x92IHliJXgC2aOJwgFJkau0TilObnUSxRFHbr6Jz1zOatkRYDL5r-8P2hhcI3RtPxckaxEpn0Yw=s533" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="300" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjzlHFoQRo_xoDxRyrVQ0sUVxETBcPVX72ngcsRmC1U8IWezBrnNEnalQBqsxMKg-Vk2qkHO6m-HfzQLPoCRzWQoiKsbghMmrDbPctU8tHDepMRII3x92IHliJXgC2aOJwgFJkau0TilObnUSxRFHbr6Jz1zOatkRYDL5r-8P2hhcI3RtPxckaxEpn0Yw=w225-h400" width="225" /></a></div>We liked it so much, we have plans for another game next week. I hope everyone has a chance to relax over the next few days, and hopefully get in a game or two over the holidays.<p></p></div></div>Desert Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13862907749003106864noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7290267799484368042.post-16844109638265408662021-12-18T15:51:00.002-06:002021-12-18T15:51:28.651-06:00In the early days of Christmas ...<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj7v4KwehMMKkuWR0-G51zWRPLr6lnLBFBuqlz9IKGsX-wWkNcw1Q20MOC_33Y_YwBFWtWJUZ4y7_b16yxkIZ8iKSj_56msmuNy5W3c4QAgw3hAjph4Ui7nLj6dedDCRDYpIlMF-Dzl5Pmimyyc724tn2HH0MeZwE-eRTosG4CRiOnzkVBcYZs9np0jtw=s477" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="477" height="377" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj7v4KwehMMKkuWR0-G51zWRPLr6lnLBFBuqlz9IKGsX-wWkNcw1Q20MOC_33Y_YwBFWtWJUZ4y7_b16yxkIZ8iKSj_56msmuNy5W3c4QAgw3hAjph4Ui7nLj6dedDCRDYpIlMF-Dzl5Pmimyyc724tn2HH0MeZwE-eRTosG4CRiOnzkVBcYZs9np0jtw=w400-h377" width="400" /></a></div>My true love gave to me some hobby-related gifts: brushes, glue, and this nifty set of Abandoned Factory scatter terrain from Mantic. I'm sorry I missed out on some pickup games of <i>Melee/Wizard</i> and the other Sunday morning events, including the flea market. </p><p>But that doesn't mean I left the con empty-handed--while browsing the dealers room, I scored this massive collection of 6mm <i>MAATAC</i>* vehicles for the eponymous "intergalactic wargame of great armored fighting machines" from Superior Models.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYYHvhi3qCuUbuQ5aWJtRau_1TFLxKkp6cFT8h67_WyrLLNa99uN8GJTCSAsbj6XfUhOIZpLOOFWM6ilfHmD72dkDkoIta1aFj6ZS4iAcP9N-tp0QUwAjYXIUIIaXWFQ_h_aaGjkq11z6J/s712/loot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="712" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYYHvhi3qCuUbuQ5aWJtRau_1TFLxKkp6cFT8h67_WyrLLNa99uN8GJTCSAsbj6XfUhOIZpLOOFWM6ilfHmD72dkDkoIta1aFj6ZS4iAcP9N-tp0QUwAjYXIUIIaXWFQ_h_aaGjkq11z6J/w400-h338/loot.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>There are well over a hundred castings in this lot, which I got for a very generous price from the vendor, a local gamer and publisher of <a href="http://miniaturereview.blogspot.com/">Miniature Review blog</a>. As a nice bonus, he threw in some <i>Starfleet Wars </i>minis (at upper right). These <i>MAATAC </i>units cover four of <a href="https://supergalacticdreadnought.blogspot.com/2010/12/five-powers.html">the Five Powers</a>, so I will still need to purchase a few Avarians to round out my collection of Aquarians, Carnivorans, Entomalians, and Terrans.</p><p>But first, I get to paint some of these! A nice find at a great gaming convention.</p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;">*<b>M</b>ultifunctional <b>A</b>rmed & <b>A</b>rmored <b>T</b>actical <b>A</b>ttack <b>C</b>omputer</span></p>Desert Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13862907749003106864noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7290267799484368042.post-47360061532177791032021-11-24T13:33:00.001-06:002021-11-24T13:33:00.186-06:00MillenniumCon Day 3 (p.m.)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4e0WTu-1Q30kt9XmoKHzcJvGAxpAaJ4_9FUqUde4oWVU4WWsDbRwE_Q9IyHrGqRzgncAtzSLNJ44G0wVEpcocmZ2UweSujUBmqfNoLxZdCwC6bdLJXaCPTuDa7VcPYJ-qvRSlkq1BJNap/s800/starfighter+1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4e0WTu-1Q30kt9XmoKHzcJvGAxpAaJ4_9FUqUde4oWVU4WWsDbRwE_Q9IyHrGqRzgncAtzSLNJ44G0wVEpcocmZ2UweSujUBmqfNoLxZdCwC6bdLJXaCPTuDa7VcPYJ-qvRSlkq1BJNap/w400-h225/starfighter+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Saturday afternoon I played a <i>Starfighter! </i>space combat game, based on the <i>Fistful of Lead </i>game engine.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdFuIWhBmEbPtrFWmH52ZLp-iXb3gaongKtPR12tBL4uAo9KHr0wjLKKRMHxDMsyEpIfc_qW3AkY8cgnmr-m6CMTYamA1p3SosbEk0uG5lf7ymDUv4wCGXqWCTmZqCmoXMP8lQ7OM_Ydt9/s781/starfighter+2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="781" data-original-width="440" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdFuIWhBmEbPtrFWmH52ZLp-iXb3gaongKtPR12tBL4uAo9KHr0wjLKKRMHxDMsyEpIfc_qW3AkY8cgnmr-m6CMTYamA1p3SosbEk0uG5lf7ymDUv4wCGXqWCTmZqCmoXMP8lQ7OM_Ydt9/w225-h400/starfighter+2.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>The game master had 3D-printed all the ships, which were based on some computer game I can't remember.
