HotT batrep: Game 2

Continuing my recap of a Hordes of the Things gameday from a few weeks ago:

For our second match, I decided to retire my fire army and bring out my undead force.  Holdfast changed his lineup slightly, subbing in a warband for some spears.
The river placement proved handy, as it forced my opponent to come around to my left with his more mobile forces.  It also brought our respective magician generals his magician and my magician general in range of one another.
The enemy mage quickly succumbed to the necromancy of my lich, getting himself frogged, and giving me the victory!
Moral of the story: Don't attempt to bespell a defending enemy magician--unless you have two more magicians of your own to counter that +2 bonus the defender gets while within 600 paces of its stronghold.

EDIT: Looking at Holdfast's account of the battle, I think he actually had a hero general for this game.  After frogging his magician, my shooters ended up forcing his hero general to recoil off the edge of the battlefield (that crease on the board in the upper left of the photo indicates the edge of the playing surface):

To be continued....

If you're using your general, don't attempt it at all ..

(If you have the extra Magicians to negate the +2 and you really *must* ensorcell the enemy Magician, use a non-general. You don't lose anything by it)

Aside from taking a pop at the odd unprotected Hero/Hero general, I tend to use bespelling infrequently, and for more mundane tasks - forcing an enemy Behemoth to flee, or stripping an overlap away from a key close combat before it's resolved. Otherwise my Magicians gets used as swordsmen with a 500p move.

It turns out that the magician wasn't his general, but your advice certainly holds true! I agree, you should only bespell targets that you can do more than recoil, like heroes, behemoths, or aerials.

I like the magician's base with the circle on it; very nice. Also like the frog :-) .

Grand stuff!
I've fielded a Magician General with two back-up magicians.
Win Big, lose bigger...
