How I hurt my hand

I'd like to say I got a cut while fighting ninjas or something, but no--it was because I was careless with a sharp knife.  During GuadaComaCon, Kutalik's Special Lady Friend needed help cutting plastic ties off a new stroller, and she didn't want to handle the blade herself.  She asked if anyone had a knife, and I quickly borrowed my brother's multitool, which contains a wicked sharp cutting implement.

So I grasp the stroller in my left hand and use the blade to cut the plastic.  But like a dumbass, I held the stroller with my hand in the direction I was cutting.  Those plastic ties were thick, so I mustered my strength to force the edge of the knife through the strap.  Of course once the razor-sharp blade broke through the plastic, it continued on into my hand, about a half-inch deep.

It hurt like hell and started bleeding profusely.  Luckily, my brother's a registered nurse, so he was able to patch me up pretty good.  The cut still hasn't healed completely, but at least I didn't have to get stitches.  The injury did kind of put a damper on the rest of the day, though.

I hesitated to tell my wife about my injury at first.  I don't know why; I guess I didn't want her to freak out or anything.  When I did tell her, she took it very calmly--and threatened me with bodily harm if I ever tried to hide another injury from her.  I'll be sure to let her know right away if I ever injure myself again.  In the meantime, I'm staying away from sharp objects.

Glad that you're healing Scribe. Was wondering about the particulars of the incident. It's good that you didn't need stitches. Personally, I think that stitches(especially upon their removal) usually hurt more than the wound itself, at least in my experiences when sutures have been required. Definitely prefer medical-grade superglue to cat-gut;-)

You dodged the stitches bullet, and you'll still have a scar to remember the incident by!

Bummer about the knife slip. My wife always wants me to go to the doctor for the least little thing. I usually give her the same diagnosis the doctor gives me, "sucks to be you" and then I have to pay the copay.

Thank you.

You have provided me--unwittingly--validation.

Ten years ago, I was driving my 2-year-old to a family/friends July 4th celebration at which was featured a massive water fight. I had returned home to pick up my brand new Super Soakers.

While in the car at a stop light, I decided to un-box them using a retractable utility knife. Same thing happened. Dang tie wouldn't cut and when it did I sunk the blade into my forefinger down to the bone. I looked down and went, "Hunh." No blood until I pulled the skin apart a little. Drove myself to the hospital with a wad of fast-food napkins pinned to my finger with my thumb, held as high as I could out the window of the car.

Spent the rest of the day in the ER getting stitches, etc. Still have the scar.

I can't use a knife or a water gun around my friends or family without being ridiculed.

Glad you're OK; my last stitches were abouyt 30 years ago when I cut my hand on a can making dinner in the kitchen - didn't have a band aid in the place, and it clearly needed stitches. I wadded it up with paper towels and drove to the ER of myy hospital - where, as a senior Resident, I also worked as a moonlighter. Kinda embarassing having your colleagues sew you up, when it's something you do evey day on the job!
